PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Diamond Project used Twitter to announce the location they say will be the spot for a Major League Ballpark to be built that can attract a team to Portland.

In a series ot tweets around noon, the Portland Diamond Project tweeted:

“We are thrilled to announce that the Portland Diamond Project has signed an agreement in principle with the Port of Portland to develop the Port’s 45-acre Terminal 2 property.

“We believe this has the potential to be a transformative landmark project for this city.

“Building an iconic, state-of-the-art ballpark along the Willamette River will catalyze economic development and capture great views of both the urban scale of the city and regional character of the Pacific Northwest.

“Our letter of intent with the Port kicks off a collaborative process with the City of Portland, and local communities, to create a Major League Baseball ballpark and destination that is truly by and for all of Portland.

“Portland Diamond Project is committed to building a sustainable, equitable, and accessible ballpark that reflects what makes Portland such a special place to live.

“That means outstanding locally sourced food and beverage amenities, environmentally sustainable construction and operations, opportunities for makers and small businesses, and an atmosphere that celebrates diversity and inclusion and is welcoming to all Portlanders.

In a statement, Mayor Ted Wheeler said:

“Baseball has a rich tradition in Portland. A ballpark along the northwest bank of the Willamette River would have a positive impact on our economy while shaping the next great PDX neighborhood. I look forward to working with the Portland Diamond Project and the Port of Portland in moving this initiative forward.”

Jonathan Jwayad, a co-owner of Baseballism, said he is “super excited” over the announcement.

“The renderings were more than we expected. Having the ballpark on the water and the roof and the tram, I think everybody is really excited,” he told KOIN 6 News.

Baseballism is the spot where Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara announced their involvement with the Portland Diamond Project earlier in 2018.

Dale Murphy, the Atlanta Braves great and native Portlander who is part of the Portland Diamond Project, tweeted:

“Re @PDXDiamondProj stadium…some have asked ‘where is the retractable roof for the stadium?’ It will retract behind home plate. Giving unobstructed views of Mt. Hood, the Fremont Bridge, Portland skyline…#MLBtoPDX”

This announcement comes 3 weeks after formally retracting an offer to buy the Portland Public Schools headquarters property.

The Northwest Portland location at Terminal 2 at the Port of Portland has the size, freeway access and is ripe for redevelopment. Public transportation currently is spotty, but the Portland Diamond Project officials previously said they would include both housing and commercial properties in any plan.

The 2 teams most often mentioned as possible MLB franchises for Portland are Oakland and Tampa Bay. However, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred previously said Portland is on the short list for an expansion team — something that may work in Portland’s favor with the group of investors currently involved in the project.
