PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A father and his 6-year-old child were hurt during a shooting in SE Portland late Thursday night, according to police.

The man was driving near SE 82nd and Holgate near Multnomah Park Cemetery when officials said his car was shot at.

A bullet reportedly grazed the man, while shards of glass fell, resulting in minor injuries for the child.

This is the second reported shooting on 82nd in a span of less than 24 hours. Portland police say another man was injured Friday afternoon in a shooting near Northeast Fremont.

KOIN 6 News reported in February that the city is on pace to break another record this year when it comes to shootings. In February, there were a total of 118 shootings, which is about a 40% increase from February 2021.

Zach Garrison and his family live in a house off Southeast 82nd and Holgate. Garrison said “this area, it’s been nice, but at the same there’s still a little bit of worry.”

The Garrison’s have lived in the area just under a year, and a few months ago, Garrison and his wife decided it might be time to find a home in a “safer” part of town.

“We’ve had a few people walk into our backyard,” Garrison said.

Now, the shooting near the intersection of 82nd and Holgate Thursday night has fueled their conversation about moving.

“Last night we heard it. It sounded kind of like a motorcycle,” Garrison said. “But then we saw the police cars and everything.”

Garrison soon realized police were investigating a shooting.

So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.
