PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An hours-long standoff between a man armed with a rifle barricaded in a house with his 87-year-old mother ended peacefully around 4:15 p.m. Monday.
The incident began around noon in the 3800 block of SE 105th. KOIN 6 News learned when the man’s sister came to check on their mother, the man would not let her in the house and pointed a rifle at his sister. The sister called 911 and sparked a massive police response.
The police presence included the Crisis Negotiation Team and the Special Emergency Reaction Team, officials said.
Authorities said it was their understanding the elderly woman was not allowed to leave the home throughout this incident.
Both the Crisis Negotiators and members of the SERT unit spoke on the phone with both the man and his mother for hours and reached this peaceful conclusion.
PPB also asked for help from Gresham police and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Officer David Baer explained, “Because of the area and it’s 4th of July, we’d like to have more folks here with more capabilities to safely resolve the situation.”
No one was hurt.
The granddaughter of the 87-year-old woman told KOIN 6 News her uncle is “a volatile career criminal” who recently moved back in with his mother. The family was uncomfortable with that, which is one reason her mother went to check on the elder woman.
The granddaughter said she is grateful police were able to resolve the situation and that her grandmother was safe.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, is in custody at the Multnomah County Jail. Charges are pending.
During the standoff, SE Bush was closed from 104th to 110th and SE 105th was closed from Francis to Bush streets.
