PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Businesses in Southwest Portland spent Sunday cleaning up after riotous activity from some destructive May Day demonstrations.

Portland Police declared a riot in downtown Portland after members from a group of at least 100 people damaged buildings and smashed windows during an “autonomous demonstration,” Saturday night.

The group started at Shemanski Park before marching toward businesses in Southwest Portland. Some members of the group smashed windows at Starbucks located on Southwest 2nd and Main, Southwest 3rd and Jefferson, and the Starbucks at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Windows at Spa Sasse’ on Alder Street were also damaged and police said demonstrators shattered a window at The Duniway hotel.

Just after 11 p.m., at least 50 people were gathered outside the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building on Macadam Avenue.

Federal officers rushed demonstrators away from the building, firing “less lethal” rounds at them.

PPB made focused arrests of individuals engaged in criminal acts including:

Phoebe Loomis, 36 years-old, of Portland, was charged with Criminal Mischief II. A helmet, gloves, metal tool, bear spray, and gas mask were seized.
Quang Nguyen, 20 years-old, of Kent, Washington was charged with Criminal Mischief I and Disorderly Conduct II. A hammer and sling shot, along with instructions on how to make a sling shot, were seized.
Krystopher Donnelly, 27 years-old, of Portland, was arrested on a warrant for Riot, Criminal Mischief I, and Resist Arrest.
Jeremiah Day, 22, of Portland, was arrested for Menacing officers with a butterfly knife.
Darren Stephens, 36 years-old, of Portland, was arrested for a warrant for Criminal Mischief II.

Similar demonstrations have been happening for months in Portland with some people vandalizing buildings and setting fires near Portland Police precincts and other businesses across the city. The ICE facility has been a frequent target in Portland for these demonstrations since last summer.

Members of these groups often advocate for abolishing police, prisons and ICE on both social media and at these demonstrations.

Saturday afternoon, the ICE building and other locations throughout Portland were the sites of various May Day marches and demonstrations for worker and immigrant rights. At one point, federal law enforcement officers rushed outside to push people away from the property.

Daytime demonstrations wrapped up peacefully just after 5:30 p.m.

Last week, Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese amended booking criteria for the Multnomah County Jail. Now, people charged with reckless burning and 2nd-degree criminal mischief “are eligible for booking” into the jail.
