PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The man accused of driving onto a sidewalk on the PSU campus and injuring three women has been identified as 61-year-old Greg Phillip Porter.

Portland police said Porter, in a Mazda Tribute SUV, drove up onto the sidewalk at SW 6th Avenue and SW Hall Street and struck the women around 10 a.m.

Porter was taken into custody in Northeast Portland Friday around 12:30 p.m.

Porter faces 3 counts each of attempted murder, assault, reckless driving and failure to perform the duties of a driver. He is being held at the Multnomah County Jail on $772,500 bail.

He does not have a criminal record. Detectives are still working to determine why Porter allegedly drove onto the sidewalk.

“Out of character”

One of Porter’s former neighbors in King City said she saw his booking photo on the news Friday night and almost didn’t recognize him.

Judith Lynne told KOIN 6 News Porter and his wife lived at the King City Apartments for about 3 years after moving from Texas. She said they were nice early on, but mounting medical problems and financial trouble seemed to eat away at the couple.

Lynne said after having back surgery, Porter was never the same and later split from his wife, who passed away a few months later. Lynne doesn’t know what happened to Porter after that.

“It just seems really out of character,” Lynne said of the PSU hit-and-run. “It’s very out of character from the man I knew. It’s just heartbreaking to hear this, get this news and hard to believe.”

She wants to let the investigation play out before jumping to any conclusions and offered her condolences to the injured women and their families.

The car involved

The Oregon license plates on the blue Mazda Tribute showed the car was registered to a man in the Beavercreek area in Clackamas County. But the man at that address told KOIN 6 News he sold the car a few months ago on Craigslist — and said his daughter goes to PSU.

The man who bought the Mazda Tribute is an auto broker in Oregon City, and he also sold the car. He told KOIN 6 News wasn’t able to identify the owner because the records were at his office.

But that car was found properly parked along a curb on NE Glisan near 16th, just behind Benson High School.

Investigation continues

“I’m still in shock, I’m shaken…can’t believe I️ just saw that…it’s shocking and they kept going. It was a hit and run, just kept going,” witness Laurel Peoples told KOIN 6.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, has cell phone video or surveillance video from nearby businesses to contact the non-emergency number at 503.823.3333.
