PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The medical examiner’s report on Jason Washington’s death shows that 9 of the 17 shots fired at him on June 29 struck his body.
Washington, 45, was killed outside the Cheerful Tortoise on June 29. He had a concealed weapon permit and a gun when he was shot by two Portland State University officers: James Dewey and Shawn McKenzie.
Portland police said 17 bullet casings were found at the scene — indicating that 17 shots were fired.
The medical examiner’s report said Washington died from multiple gunshots to his torso. He was hit in the chest, lower abdomen, thighs and back. Two of the gunshots grazed his head and lower back.
The gunshot wounds damaged his heart, aorta, lungs, liver, spleen, stomach and colon. Bullets also caused fractures of his collar bone and ribs.
After the shooting, both Dewey and McKenzie told officers that Washington pointed a gun at them.
While Washington had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, the gun he had wasn’t his, according to documents released on Sept. 14. He took the gun from his friend earlier in the night to keep his friend from getting into trouble.
A grand jury recently ruled that no criminal prosecution is warranted in the fatal shooting of Washington. According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, the grand jury ruled the use of deadly force was a lawful act of self-defense and/or defense of a third person.
