SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) — A Salem police officer shot a suspect next to an Applebee’s Restaurant after a confrontation escalated early Friday night.

Around 7:25 p.m., police were called to the Applebee’s at 2625 Liberty Street NE. The suspect — 33-year-old Casey Duane Howe of Salem — was described by police as a “wanted person” and had a knife when he confronted Cpl. Jake Pratt, Salem police officials said in a release.

Pratt fired his weapon and Howe was wounded. Howe was rushed to Salem Health for treatment then was transferred to a Portland hospital. Authorities describe his condition as “stable.”

Pratt is on administrative leave — standard procedure — during the investigation, which will be conducted by the Oregon State Police.
