PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Oregon Senator Ron Wyden stopped by the KOIN 6 News studio Sunday to discuss his work in Washington, D.C.

Wyden is one of many lawmakers who want to block President Donald Trump’s recent emergency declaration for the southern border wall.

“The president started this with a fable,” Wyden said. “He started with the fable that the Mexicans were going to pay for his wall. He said it again and again.”

Wyden is also looking ahead to the 2020 presidential election. He isn’t running but said he’s still keeping an eye on the growing field of Democratic candidates.

“I do think that particularly the senators understand the importance of making this an issue-driven election, rather than a personality-driven campaign,” he said. “It’s going to be spirited, there’s a lot to talk about but on balance I think having more people in the field gives a chance to really air the big issues, that’s a plus for our country.”

The senator has several town hall meetings coming up this week. He’ll be in Lane County on Tuesday and Jackson County on Wednesday.
