PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One of Portland’s beloved food festivals, the Bite of Oregon, is taking a break this year.

The Bite of Oregon showcases Oregon food and supports the Special Olympics. For 35 years, the Bite of Oregon has raised money for the organization and in 2017, it moved from the waterfront to the Rose Quarter.

According to the Bite of Oregon website, the cost of putting on the event is rising and the hiatus will allow time and resources to focus on the mission of providing sports opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

“To all the fans, chefs, foodies and supporters of the Bite, we here at Special Olympics Oregon thank you for all you’ve done to make the Bite the amazing event is has become,” the online announcement said.

The festival usually happens around Labor Day. Organizers will announce in late 2018 what the future holds for the event.

Special Olympics Oregon serves more than 14,000 people every year. The organization also suspended its 2018 games in July due to financial issues.
