GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in a shooting at a Gresham pub that injured three people, newly released court documents state.
Kenneth Allen Sheets, 34, was indicted by a Multnomah County grand jury this week on charges that include two counts each of attempted murder and second-degree assault; one count each of first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of third-degree assault.
The three victims were shot March 13, 2015 just before 11:30 p.m. at “Puff’s Pub,” Gresham Police Detective Anthony L. Cobb wrote in a search warrant affidavit. The first person to call 911 told dispatchers that security was holding down the shooter, later identified as Sheets. The gun used by Sheets was taken by security and held behind the bar, Cobb wrote.
When Sheets was first arrested, he did not make any statements, court documents state. Police found a cellphone on his person and identified him using his Oregon driver’s license, court documents state.
As officers were taking Sheets into custody, a separate patrol officer arrived on scene and was directed inside the bar by employees. The officer found and secured the Glock 23 .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun that Sheets used in the shooting, court documents state.
One of the shooting victims told Detective Scott Hogan that he went to the pub with two of his friends, Cobb wrote. Jason Thompson told police that his two friends arrived at the bar with the person who did the shooting, court documents state. Thompson told police that he was about to exit the bar when Sheets entered, pulled the gun and fired, court documents state. One of the rounds struck Thompson on the right side of his face, Cobb wrote.
The second victim told Hogan that he was at the bar playing pool with his friend when he heard the gunshot. Jose De Jesus Ramirez-Ramirez turned and saw the shooter with a gun in his right hand, Cobb wrote. Ramirez did not know the shooter and “had no idea why he was shooting inside of the bar,” Cobb wrote. Ramirez sustained a gunshot wound to his lower body, court documents state.
Adrian Mora-Garcia, who was playing pool with Ramirez, told Hogan that he “observed some sort of argument between two subjects near the front door,” Cobb wrote. Garcia turned to run toward the bar’s back exit but was shot in the lower body, court documents state. Garcia did not know the shooter and did not know what the argument was about, court documents state.
A friend of Sheets told police that he drove Sheets to Puff’s after they were at a nearby poker establishment in Southeast Portland. When Sheets and his friend got to Puff’s, they learned that other friends already at the bar were getting ready to leave. For unknown reasons, Sheets entered the bar and started shooting, court documents state.
When detective attempted to interview Sheets, he declined to make any statements but Detective Dan Marciano “could smell an overwhelming odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Mr. Sheets (sic) person,” Cobb wrote.
Sheets is scheduled to be arraigned on the new grand jury indictment Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
