KALAMA, Wash. (KOIN) — The man suspected of fatally shooting a Cowlitz County deputy died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The coroner’s office released the autopsy on 33-year-old Brian Butts Wednesday morning and ruled his death a homicide. However, the report added that homicide is a “medical finding and does not in any way establish criminal intent.”
No further description of the injuries was provided.
Butts was shot on Sunday night after two Kelso police officers answered a “suspicious subject” call. Authorities said the officers, Sgt. Fletcher and Detective Gower, were “met with an armed combatant.” The two 24-year veterans of the force were placed on standard paid administrative leave.
Butts is suspected of shooting and killing Deputy Justin DeRosier on Saturday night. The 29-year-old deputy was dispatched to a disabled motorhome blocking the road and was shot sometime after arriving. He died in surgery.
