KALAMA, Wash. (KOIN) — The investigation into the fatal shooting of Cowlitz County Deputy Justin DeRosier continues. Officials are expected to provide an update sometime Thursday.
Here’s a timeline of what we know so far
Saturday, April 13: The 29-year-old deputy responded to the report of a disabled motorhome blocking the road around 10:30 p.m. He was shot sometime after arriving and rushed to the hospital.
The search for the shooter started immediately and went well into Sunday.
Sunday, April 14: Deputy DeRosier died sometime after midnight in surgery.
Two Kelso police officers answered a “suspicious subject” call at 7:05 p.m. on Spencer Creek Road. They said they were “met with an armed combatant.” The suspect, 33-year-old Brian Butts, died in a shootout with police.
Matthew Veatch was arrested later that night for allegedly helping Butts evade authorities after the fatal deputy shooting.
Monday, April 15: Authorities officially identified Butts as the suspected deputy killer.
Wednesday, April 17: An autopsy report determined Butts died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
