PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — About 135 people reported seeing a bright fireball in the Oregon sky shortly before midnight Friday night.

Jim Todd, director of space education at OMSI, told KOIN 6 News it’s “hard to say if it was a spacecraft debris or not.”

The reported sightings of the fireball came from Port Angeles, Washington south to Medford, with most of them in the Willamette Valley and the Oregon coast.

Todd said based on early reports, the object was moving west to east.

“Very bright, lasted for roughly 7 to 8 seconds,” Todd said. “That is fairly fast, and bright white, bluish in color, seems to have broken up into pieces.”

Todd hopes they can triangulate the data in order to find the mystery fireball.

“If it survived at all, it’s probably in the Rocky Mountains,” Todd said.

The Fireball Event Log documented who reported the streak and where they were.
