PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Residents in both Linn County and Marion County were allowed to return to their homes Wednesday evening as officials lifted evacuation levels for the Santiam Park Fire. 

The fire was reported Tuesday afternoon off of Highway 22 in Lyons near the North Santiam State Recreation Area, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry.  

Strong east winds fanned the flames, causing the fire to jump the Santiam River, officials said. ODF said the fire burned 189 acres in Linn and Marion counties and was 80 percent contained by 5 p.m. Wednesday. 

Burn bans are now in effect for both counties plus Clackamas.

About 35 homes and 30 outbuildings were listed as “threatened” Tuesday night, but no structures were lost and there were no reported injuries by Wednesday evening. 

More than 100 people worked to put the blaze out and crews on the ground were assisted by a helicopter dropping buckets of water on hot spots. 

Officials said improved weather conditions helped crews build and strengthen containment lines. 

ODF said the fire was 100 percent contained by Thursday evening. No structures were lost, no injuries were reported and the fire remained at 189 acres. 

The cause of the fire was under investigation. 

Officials reminded the public that wildfires can ignite any time of the year, even in mid-March. 

“We’re experiencing very warm weather,” said Landers. “There’s also low humidity levels, which any time of the year creates additional risk of fire.” 

The Oregon State Fire Marshal said the Santiam Park Fire is a reminder for people to protect their homes from wildfires. 

Some tips to keep your home safe: 

  • Keep roofs, gutters, and eaves clear of all leaves, pine needles, and other flammable debris
  • Remove dead vegetation a minimum of 30 feet around your house
  • Prune trees and have grass kept short and green to keep fire on the ground and more manageable by firecrews

The fire marshal also reminded the public to call local fire officials before burning yard debris to check on restrictions or whether any permits are needed.
