PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Shots rang out at McCoy Park Friday afternoon, injuring a man in his 20s in front of multiple witnesses.

The shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. in the area of North Trenton Street and Newman Avenue, Portland police said.

Linda Dougherty, who lives nearby, told KOIN 6 News she heard at least 5 shots fired.

“I look out my door and 5 cop cars came up this way and I heard people screaming,” Dougherty said. “I knew someone got hurt.”

She said she was worried about how much time passed between hearing the shots and the police arriving. Witnesses said it took about 20 minutes.

“I wonder why it took so long for the police to get here,” she said.

Kids were playing at the park when the shooting happened, shooting hoops while police looked for a shooting suspect.

“There was a black car and they were over there by the house and slowed down where they were going to shoot,” a young witness told KOIN. “And then they let out 6 or 7 shots and then they sped past and left around the corner. I ran to my friend’s house and I like ran in because I was scared.”

One neighbor said this is a changing and diverse community, and he wants city leaders to step up and keep it safe.

“I think there needs to be some greater partnership including the involvement of our mayors,” Kidus Yarid said. “Which, we’ve seen their presence but we’re still waiting on more action to be taken.”

The victim is expected to survive his injuries.

The gang enforcement team is investigating the shooting. They believe a green SUV found on North Fiske Street, near where the victim was shot, was involved. Anyone with information is asked to call 503.823.3333.
