PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — With the emergence of the Portland Diamond Project, locals have wondered: how realistic is the idea of a Major League Baseball team in Portland?

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred certainly has the Rose City on a short list.

On Tuesday, Manfred made an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show where he was asked if baseball would ever appear in Las Vegas. The conversation the delved into the concept of the league eventually growing to 32 teams, one of which could be Portland.

Manfred said the league has an “embarrassment of riches” with potential, viable options. Along with Portland and Las Vegas, he named Nashville, Charlotte, Montreal and even Mexico as places that could add a baseball franchise.

Portland Diamond Project emerged in April after they announced that they had made two offers for potential MLB Stadiums. Then, on June 1, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Ciara were announced as investors in the project.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said in June that the idea of a baseball team in Portland is exciting.

“Watching the Portland Diamond Project steadily gain momentum over the past few months has been exciting … I look forward to hearing more about the possibilities of this initiative,” he said.
