PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Oregon Ducks tight end Spencer Webb died in an accident Wednesday near Triangle Lake in Lane County, authorities said.

The 22-year-old fell down a steep trail and hit his head around 2:30 p.m., according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. Bystanders reportedly tried to save him, but officials said they and responding paramedics were unsuccessful.

Players and coaches paid tribute to Webb on Twitter overnight, including Oregon football coach Dan Lanning.

“So full of life in every moment of the day,” Lanning tweeted. “Your smile and energy will be missed Spencer. I love you!”

In a statement Thursday, the University of Oregon Athletics said, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Spencer Webb. Our hearts go out to his family, teammates, and friends at such a difficult time. We will miss Spencer greatly.”

Webb had played with the Ducks since 2019.

LCSO said his death appears to be accidental.
