PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Three men are recovering after a drive-by shooting that occurred Monday night in Northeast Salem.
The bullets strung out along Northeast 47th Avenue near Polaris Street.
Neighbors are grappling with witnessing this gun violence right outside their doors. They said they heard 6 gunshots and called 911 just after 10 p.m.
“It’s frightening,” said Holly, a witness who asked KOIN to not use her last name.
Holly said she ran outside to help one of the men hold a towel to his wound until emergency responders arrived.
Another neighbor said this shooting makes her feel sad and scared, hitting so close to home. Literally — with a bullet hole right through her car door to prove it.
Three gunshot wound victims were taken to the hospital and they are expected to survive, according to Marion County Deputies.
The suspect drove away from the scene and no information about the person or their car is available.
Holly told KOIN that she’s sensitive to our constitutional right to bear arms.
“But, I also want to say that times have changed, and gun violence isn’t ‘just going out and scaring up something to eat,'” she said.
This isn’t the first time she’s witnessed gun violence on her block.
“Now it feels epidemic, it’s turned into person and against person and the damage it causes in peoples lives in peoples lives and families,” she said.
She said balancing gun safety is a difficult line to walk, but she hopes her neighborhood is willing to stand up to the challenge.
“As a community, we need to come together to try and do something about this,” she said. “This is our community, it doesn’t belong to the folks who come in and want to cause damage.”
Neighbors have told KOIN that another drive-by shooting happened across the street 3 years ago. With this latest incident, neighbors are hoping they can bring whoever is responsible to justice.
Deputies are still investigating and ask anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office at 503.588.5032.
