PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man has been charged with murder in the death of his son in Salem early Sunday morning.

Alberto Medina-Cortes was arrested after police found Fransicso Torres-Perez with a gunshot wound on Northeast 22nd Street just after 3 a.m., police said. He died at the hospital.

Neighbors said the family had been having a celebration for the victim’s mom just before the shooting happened. They said the shooting was very out of character.

One woman, who didn’t want to be identified, told KOIN 6 News she called police around 2:40 a.m. after she heard glass breaking outside. She initially thought it was a car prowler and went outside to investigate.

She said she heard arguing and realized it was a domestic dispute.

“The son arrived and ran inside the house and a few minutes later came out with his mom in his arms, put her in the car and the dad came outside –assuming he was the dad — they were arguing, the mom got out of the car and went back inside,” the woman said.

She said the arguing continued but she didn’t hear the gunshot.

Another neighbor, Grace Bell, said her family’s home security camera captured a “pop” that could have been a gunshot just before 3 a.m. and the ambulance arriving on camera 20-30 minutes later.

Police haven’t confirmed the timeline but said they got a call about a disturbance around 3:19 a.m.

Medina-Cortes appeared in court Monday and faces 1 count of murder with a firearm, according to court documents. He is due back in court on August 13.

This shooting was one of three incidents of violence in Salem overnight. Another shooting happened at Englewood Park, less than a mile away. There was also a drive-by shooting that left 3 hurt on Monday night.
